Name Day & The Suwon Fortress Conquest

To celebrate Megane’s Name Day, Jonas invited Megane out to go explore the Suwon Fortress

12 November 2022

Originally, the girls wanted to go to Gyeongbokgung Palace and rent a Hanbok. However, they were met with a series of unfortunate events. Firstly, the bus ride was originally only supposed to take 1 hour and 15-20 mins, however, due to a huge protest that disrupted the public, the bus ride became 3 hours. In the end, the bus driver told us all to just get off and carry on by foot. We continued the rest of the journey via train, only to realize that it was pouring at our destination, and will be for the rest of the day. 😭

Hence, we feeling tired and hungry, we decided to get a nice warm lunch in the few restaurants that were open at 3pm as most restaurants are closed from 3-5pm as it is their break time. We then went to visit Insadong which was nearby and waited out the downpour in a poop themed café.

BTW, we came across this Kopitiam café but I have never seen Kaya toast with salad and the egg was sunny side up, not half boiled QWQ. Authenticity is non existent, let alone the supposed kaya toast set being $17 SGD, I can buy a full meal for 2 people at Toast Box for that price.

Anyways, since there wasn’t anywhere we could really go to due to the rain, Ya Yun suggested we pay a visit to Ikea.

We had a blast fooling around over there. Apparently Korea has this section of Ikea that business owners can go to to get professional designers to design their offices, shops or cafes for them. No wonder all the cafes in Korea look so gorgeous.

They even had some Korea exclusive items and we ended the day with a feast at Ikea. PS: I overate and went into a food coma.

Due to the weather forecast forecasting that there would be rain from Saturday to Monday, the girls made a wet plan. We went to Express Bus Terminal again for another shopping spree after a hearty tteokbokki buffet where I went absolutely crazy cause I have a strange obsession with eating tteokbokki.

Anyways, I realized that T1’s Headquarters were only 2 train stops away from where we were and asked the girls if we could go visit there as I wanted to get the official T1 X Nike collaboration hoodie. #T1 FIGHTING

The girls were really nice and decided to accompany me there even though they didn’t know anything about e-sports or League of Legends. The T1 HQ was super cool and I felt extremely honored to be there. To know that the players were all just upstairs training and streaming. I bought my $90 SGD hoodie and we went to COEX to grab dinner and take pictures at the giant Christmas tree in the center of the Starfield Library.

Jonas invited me out to celebrate my Name Day and we decided to spend it exploring the Suwon Fortress. In the Czech Republic, each day of the year, except national holidays, corresponds to a personal name. People celebrate their Name Day (“svátek“—or more formally “jmeniny“, but that term isn’t usually used) on the date corresponding to their own given name.

According to him, my Name Day fell on the 16 of November. After class, I went with him to the North Gate of the Suwon Fortress and we had a wonderful time exploring the whole place. The fortress is extremely well maintained and is truly a testimonial to the wonders of Korean architecture. You could feel as though you were being transported back to ancient Korea. Jonas who is familiar with castle and ancient architecture even explained to me what some structures were built for as Czech Republic also has many castles and ruins. The fortress was also surrounded by purple silver grass fields which are amazing for photos.

We also explored the streets of Suwon which had a peculiar resemblance to an American street and the Suwon Nammun Market where many elderly clothes were being sold.

Afterwards came back to Bojeong, had dinner and went back to get a good rest.

Overall an amazing Name Day.

Closing Thoughts

There isn’t as much happening these days, we have already gotten used to the rigor of life here. Weekends are always fully outing days and Tuesday or Wednesday are also outing days as well. It is scary to think that we are only left with about 1.5 months left in Korea and it feels like it was just yesterday where 3 of us landed in Korea. It is also getting colder and colder here everyday and the dorm office had the bright idea of not giving us a heater. The only heating we have is 1 hour of the floor being heated per day. So the rest of the time is us just baring with the cold and since they shut off the aircon system in the whole dorm, the only source of ventilation we have is opening the window where the temperature is usually below 10 or even negative. Highly suggest you get heat packs or wear warmer since the dorm office refuses to do anything about it. Anyways, the next few weeks have rather big events happening and we will also be entering finals soon. Hope we all can pass.

With that, signing off,

Megane
